‘Wake up and sleep’ is a project focused on expressing the unsettling state of sleep in our society. With sleep being increasingly brought to light within popular media and public discussion, sleep in the 21st century has been deemed to be more neglected and problematic than ever. This University project aimed to raise awareness on the matter, and encourage self-reflection and understanding of our own behavior and attitudes towards the issue. Using vibrant visuals and moving elements, I aimed to bring to life the chaotic surroundings that inhibit the single most important behavioral experience that we have. The stop-motion animation and model have been made using hand-crafted paper models. Using the medium of stop-motion allowed the paper models to come to life and characterise some of the issues we have with regards to sleep. Such influences include light, technology, toxins and highly vivid colour. Making the animation fast paced and rich with intensity sends the message of chaos and the loss of control we’ve developed when it comes to sleep.
